Our June 12th home bout was a great way to kick off the summer. The girls looked hot and the competition didn't stand a chance. We hosted the Ventura Derby Darlin's and treated them to an OC-style derby beat down. The Orange Crushers and the Wheel Housewives of Orange County both had victory margins of over 120 points against their competitors. Congrats on the wins ladies! Congratulations to OC MVP's Dirty Deborah Harry and Beantown Brawler!

On June 26th, the Wheel Housewives of Orange County hit the road to take on the Prison City Derby Dames in Corona. The first of a two-game feud between the two teams, this bout was as fierce and feisty as they come. The Wheel Housewives of Orange County pulled out a win with a final score of 118-90. But now Prison City is ready to come back with a vengeance for Round 2. Be sure to catch the second game on August 14th at our home rink!

Next bout on August 14th!

We are using the month of July to take our game to the next level and practicing hard to bring you great derby action in August. So be sure to get your tickets for our next home bout on August 14th. The Wheel Housewives of Orange County will take on Prison City in the second of a two-bout duel. Blockwork Orange (formerly known as the Orange Crushers) will battle Central Coast Roller Derby.

Purchase your tickets

4th time is the charm! OC was invited for their 4th appearance to hit streets in the Long Beach parade! Almost 100 of OC’s Roller Girls skated the route along Ocean Boulevard, between Temple and Alamito in support of this community event. We passed out orange necklaces and skated the parade and had tons of crowd support!
Friends and Family and Fans of OCRG,

I know it looked like we were going to raise $6k we didn't and we didn't raise the $7k or $9k or $10k that was estimated…

In 2007: we raised about $300 in two weeks through cupcake sales and $5 donations
In 2008: we donated $1500 in 3 weeks during a 2 day tournament
In 2009: we raised $6k in 5 weeks

Drum Roll HERE……………………….

As a direct result of YOUR gifts and the gifts of your friends, family, friends of friends, friends on other derby leagues, childhood friends, grandmas & vendors we raised over $11,000 in 6 weeks (do a little dance of your own here!!!) to provide financial and emotional assistance for women and their families as they are going through breast cancer treatment.

Thank you so much to the league members (and those that love us) for your dedication to help others that made this happen… even with games (and life) going on- our league pulled together- We are so blessed and because of you.. Roll For A Cure 2010 was a success!

Our first 5k Walk & Roll had 170 participants wearing silver halos to represent that we all can be "Angels Here on Earth". The goodie bags from local merchants were a big hit and the race awards from TruLuv Tool Company were truly loved. We had amazing gifts of time, energy and dollars donated by our skaters, local merchants, survivors and family members!

Our evening roller derby event attracted tons of fans to support the cause and enjoy some fun shopping. A big shout goes out to our sponsors and vendors that donated opportunity-drawing items, discounted their regular service fees or made a donation. (Most of our sponsors stepped it up for this event!!)

A big yum goes out to Blackmarket Bakery for their tasty cupcakes and Arrowhead and Suds Sports Grill for the snacks to refuel our walkers. Thanks to our media and online friends for posting the articles and photos from the events on websites, email blasts and Facebook pages.

Thank you to everyone that sold opportunity drawing tickets, helped find donors, got fees reduced, picked up stuff, delivered stuff, sold bout tickets, sponsorship packages, got raffle prizes, silent auction prizes, assembled goodie bags, rolled t-shirts, worked tables, sold beer, sold merch, cleaned up at the park- handed out water.. PIMPED the event on Facebook, twitter, texts, phone calls, handed out fliers, designed fliers, designed t-shirt, picked up boxes, delivered water, managed port-a johns.. and so much more!

Your help means so much to the strength of league and is invaluable to the clients of Breast Cancer Angels. Thank you for joining with us to make a difference in the lives of local women and families.

Sincerely,

I wish I could say that, following my Fit-Not-Hit workout with the OC Roller Girls, I sat down at my computer, fingers flying, and out popped this story.

The reality is that said fingers were sore from an unflattering, noisy and unsuccessful tushy-save. At home,
said tushy was placed gingerly upon a pillow with my computer balanced on my knees in a way that defied logic.

I know, there are questions, such as: “How could this be fun?”

But the Fit-Not-Hit workout wasn’t about violence or booty-shorts. There is no body contact, and fishnets are not required.

My class instructor was Kay, a member of one of the traveling competitive OC Roller Girls teams. She had us skating around the rink, stopping (in theory) and sprinting. My classmates were moms and daughters, people there for weight loss and those who wanted an unusual but highly effective workout in a fun atmosphere.

The OC Roller Girls are not about pulverizing people who come to the workouts. In fact, let me shoot a hole in the derby-girl stereotype: These women are moms, people who wear business suits during the week and read gossip magazines in line at the supermarket.

Luz, a derby team member, used to weigh more. “Derby is my life,” she says. “I used to have way low self-esteem. Now I have muscles. I say to myself, ‘I’m so cool!’”

Padding, a helmet and skates are required (go to Moxi in Long Beach or sincityskates.com.) Butt padding is not required but recommended – highly recommended.

Welcome to the World of Roller Derby

Check out the article here By Sarah Vaughn on Apr. 12, 2010 There’s a thud as a girl in short shorts and roller skates slams into the wall. She smiles, flips off her assailant and zips off to catch up with the pack. Welcome to roller derby.

Invented in the 1930s by sports promoter Leo Seltzer, roller derby has gone through many incarnations. Contemporary roller derby, characterized by its underground, punk-rock, do-it-yourself attitude and showcased in movies like “Whip It,” started in Austin, Texas circa 2002 and has since exploded into nearly 500 leagues worldwide.

The OC Roller Girls league practices take place behind the Rinks in Huntington Beach, CA, a threadbare complex that smells like a damp hockey locker room, in the middle of a vast warehouse room complete with pallet racks.

Girls filter in and start suiting up. Any preconceptions I had about derby girls are quickly obliterated. Instead of fearsome, 20-something, cooler-than-thou indie girls with arm sleeve tattoos and dyed asymmetrical haircuts, I find myself surrounded by every kind of woman imaginable: tiny, muscular, chubby, quiet, old and young, moms, students, teachers, CEOs and rockabilly housewives. They’re also friendly, chatting playfully with each other as they suit up.

“Holla!” shouts Mistress Mwahaha in greeting when she sees Brik Wall. “Er, holler,” she corrects herself. “I’m white. I forgot.” “How do you spell that?” demands Brik.

“Holler. H-O-L-L-E-R.”

“That’s right. Don’t forget!”

The rules of the game are simple in theory. Two teams clad in quad roller skates dash around an oval track and try to score points by lapping their opponents. Jammers are the scorers and try to pass the opposite team’s blockers. Blockers help their own jammer through the pack and punish the other jammer with hip-checks, booty bumps and upper-body slams. Although there are rules that govern the legality of blocks, derby is a full-contact sport that often results in players crashing into the walls, the floor, referees and each other.

Derby names are one of the most fun and campy aspects of the sport. Players are known not by normal names, but by clever, subversive monikers derived from well-known personages (Taylor Swiftly), word play (Naughty Pine) or reputation (Megan-a-Mess). Rotten O’s name stands for Rotten Ovary, based on an experience with a dermoid cyst she had removed from her ovary.

Getting hurt is an integral part of roller derby, with almost every girl enduring sprains, aches and the ubiquitous bruises. The girls learn to deal with it, but deliberately trying to hurt other players isn’t tolerated.

“A lot of people think there’s a lot of violence, like punching, kicking,” says Megan-a-Mess, referring to the stereotypical derby girls of yesteryear who were encouraged to fight. This image is one that most modern derby girls are trying to buck. Although some renegade leagues still kick, bite and scratch to the fans’ delight, the WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association), derby’s main governing body, forbids such practices in an attempt to legitimize the sport.

Finally, game night arrives. Although it doesn’t start until 7:00, all the girls arrive two hours early — there’s much to do. At 6:30, when the doors open, a line already meanders back through the parking lot. Fans of every demographic are represented: couples, hipster college kids, rednecks, groupies, derby girls from other leagues and a surprising number of families.

The game is difficult to follow and most of us only know who’s winning by looking at the scoreboard. Girls weave in and out chaotically, falling and getting called out for illegal actions. Despite our confusion and some gnarly spills, the overall atmosphere is one of good-natured excitement, with girls laughing and dancing on the line. The first 30-minute period finishes with the Bombshells up 57-42.

The second half is more exciting. Chick Norris injures her knee and is accompanied off the track by EMTs. The Heartbreaker’s main jammer Hell Torro leads the Heartbreakers to a narrow 101-99 victory with only minutes left in the game.

Everyone without prior plans or a bedtime proceeds to the after party at Suds Sports Bar. Overall it’s a tame affair. Fans and derby girls flood the place, partaking in cheap, greasy food and pitchers of beer. A tipsy ref buys me a Coke, introduces me to everyone and tells me stories about the legendary antics he’s witnessed at celebrations of yore.

A toast goes up in the room. “To derby!” the girls and their fans yell, raising their beers and soft drinks.
Darla Deville, exultant after playing her first real game, takes a drink and declares, “I love these girls! Even when they kick my ass.” Her enthusiasm provides all the more reason for UCI students to start doing the derby.
OC Roller Girls in Coast Magazine

Deborah Monterrosa doesn’t come across as the lady-of-leisure type we know so well here in OC: the kind to spend her free waking moments getting grape seed extract facials and Botox injections, and lunching with friends after a hard morning of shopping and sending the kids off to school with the nanny. But if you ask her (and we did), that kind of lifestyle, frankly, leaves much to be desired. Monterrosa, captain of the OC Roller Girls travel team, prefers to spend her time at the skating rink, where the niceties of polite society are discarded in favor of a pair of roller skates, outlandish outfits and 14 women on an opposing roller derby team trying to pass her on an oval track.

It’s not so unusual these days. Women all over the country are joining roller derby leagues as an outlet for the tribulations of day-to-day life. “After high school and college, there are hardly any organizations or contact sports for women,” says Monterrosa.

“After they leave school, many women don’t know what they’re about, but then they get here and they get to pick their name and their outfit and they become individuals again.” (Monterrosa’s derby moniker is “Dirty Deborah Harry.”) But for Monterrosa personally, joining OC Roller Girls was a way to distract herself from the superficial rut in which many women often find themselves.

“Honestly, it helps to have some issues [when you join OC Roller Girls],” she says, laughing. “When I wasn’t skating, I was one of those women who got together with her friends to talk about bad relationships and eating disorders and why we think we’re fat.”

Letting go of those hang-ups can even lead to unexpected personal freedom. “Some women don’t know they have it in them, but then they get out there and have a little bit of contact and can’t get enough of it. I’ve seen transformations like you wouldn’t believe.”

Having joined OC Roller Girls at its inception four years ago at age 38, Monterrosa knows more than most the power of a confidence boost that comes from being part of a group of diverse women that range in age from 18 to 52 and come in all shapes, sizes and backgrounds. And that’s not to mention the fact that these same women consistently sell out venues to crowds of devoted fans.

“Once people come, they want to come again,” she says. It’s something you haven’t seen before, and let’s face it, it’s girls. Plus, when women get hit and roll into the crowd, that’s just a good time, period.” What more could a spectator ask for?

OC Roller Girls to Defend Undefeated Season Against Sacramento on April 10

Media Release
How to Play
Roller Derby is not just a glamour contest or a staged sideshow – a lot of skill and training goes into this sport. Two teams of five players face off on the track, each team consisting of four blockers and a jammer. Jammers score points by passing members of the opposing team. Blockers try to stop the opposing jammer from passing them, while also pushing around the opposing team’s blockers to help their own jammer score. (Did we mention they’re also going flat-out on roller skates?) The action is fast, ferocious, and non-stop!

About the Orange County Roller Girls
Established in June 2006, the Orange County Roller Girls are Orange County’s league of all-female flat track roller derby skaters. The league is league owned and operated by over 100 very diverse women who have one very strong bond in common: roller derby! These women encompass a wide variety of backgrounds, ages, shapes, and skill levels. Not only do the women of OCRG work hard and train hard to be fearless skaters, they also share their strong sense of community off the rink devoting their time to various fundraising and community services.
OC ROLLER GIRLS DO A DOUBLE SMACKDOWN!

The OC Roller Girls took their derby action to a new location for March's Shamrock Smackdown bout on 3/13/20. We stormed the gates of The Phoenix Club in Anaheim to rumble with NoTown Roller Derby. Crowds loved the Battlegrounds Pro Wrestling! OC brought wrestling and derby back together in style!
The floor was slick, the crowd was crazed, and the OC Roller Girls were ready for some hard derby action. Fresno's NoTown teams both put up a great fight, but OC was on a take-no-prisoners rampage.

The fans were on their feet as the Wheel Housewives hit the final whistle with a 116 to 42 victory. The Orange Crushers used strategy, sass and style to land a 146 to 21 win in the second bout of the night. Congrats on the victories, OCRG!
The Heartbreakers fell behind in the first half with the Bombshells leading 57-46. In the second half, the Bombshells widened their lead 18 more points. What looked like an end to the undefeated record of the Heartbreakers, they kicked it into high gear and never looked back. Taking advantage of a flurry of Bombshells being sent to the penalty box, Heartbreaker Kay Hoenaze put 4 on the board to push the Heartbreakers into a 101-99 lead in the last three minutes of the game. Then the Heartbreakers' Beantown Brawler took the lead in the final jam, she called it quits while they were ahead, leaving them with the win.

OC Roller Girls Date A Derby Dame Event in OC Weekly

CHECK OUT SLIDESHOW HERE

OC Weekly

In a world filled with girls who want to look the same, one must veer from the oft-trodden path of emaciated, factory-stamped, bi-curious blond bimbos to find a woman unlike any other. Enter the sassy strutters and kicking butters of the burlesque (heels!) and derby girl (wheels!) scenes—gals who shatter both body stereotypes and noses, proving that sexy comes in more colors than a Puerto Rican prom dress.

These bodacious and battle-worn babes continue to revitalize and reinvent their time-honored art forms, and in a world in which kitsch and camp are often in short supply, they are solid proof that marketing geniuses can, indeed, come wrapped in fishnets.

He didn’t believe me, so I pointed at my feet, and he ran off. My size 10s saved me.” Sexiest food: A Carl’s Jr. Western Bacon Cheeseburger—“if you can eat it while riding a mechanical bull.” Turn-off: Guys who don’t “manscape.”

The District

The OC Roller Girls are ready for their annual ‘Love Hurts’ derby Saturday — and yes, they’ve all signed their waivers.
By Michael Miller Updated: Wednesday, February 10, 2010 5:07 PM PST

Genny Davis will be giddy with excitement when she hits the rink for the first time Saturday. With any luck, she’ll be conscious when she leaves.

The Orange Coast College student and professional dog walker recently joined the OC Roller Girls, a roller-derby league that competes twice a month, and the danger signals were there from the start. In one of the first games she attended, one player shattered her ankle and another injured her back. Her most recent practice scrimmage sent contestants home with an injured knee, a bruised tailbone and a split lip, at least.

Then there was the first practice she attended after joining the league, which officially bore the title Fresh Meat. Davis, a Laguna Beach resident, has no illusions about roller derby being a polite sport. But after four months of honing her skills and enjoying the Roller Girls’ camaraderie, she’s OK with taking a spill or two.

“I could barely skate at one point, and now I’m so much faster and so much stronger than I used to be four months ago,” said Davis, who plays blocker for the Back Bay Bombshells under the pseudonym Darla DeVill. “And that’s a great feeling. I’ve heard people talk about a runner’s high, but there’s a skater’s high, too.”

Starting a league from scratch

Saturday’s contest between two OC Roller Girls teams, the Bombshells and the Huntington Heartbreakers, is the league’s second home game of the year. Roller derby pits two teams of five against each other, with one player on each side, known as the jammer, trying to score points by skating past the four opposing blockers. The team with the most points at the final buzzer wins.

To those who play the sport, it’s a passion. But Heather Shelton, who founded Roller Girls in 2006, has more experience in the boardroom than on the rink.

A decade ago in Tuscon, Ariz., she was a fan of the local roller derby team, but couldn’t sign up because she was in graduate school and lacked health insurance. Upon moving to Orange County a few years back, she attended an L.A. Derby Dolls show and loved it — except for the commute.

“On the drive home, I figured, ‘I’ve got to do this myself,’” Shelton said.

While working by day as an administrator for Opera Pacific, the Long Beach resident obtained a business license and placed an ad on Craigslist seeking roller derby players and coaches. The league has now grown to nearly 100 members.

‘We do it all for love’

The rosters of the Roller Girls, who play home games at the Rinks in Huntington Beach, draw from a wide range of the community. The only requirements are that players be 18 or older and have health insurance. Upon signing up, members sign a waiver releasing the league from liability and join one of the committees — charity, ticket sales and so on — that run and promote the matches.

Philanthropy is a major part of Shelton’s organization, which she runs on top of her regular job for the nonprofit Breast Cancer Angels. The Roller Girls pick a charitable cause for each event, with $1 from each ticket Saturday going to the Assistance League of Fullerton. The title of the contest, in honor of Valentine’s Day, is Love Hurts.

Every month except July and December, the Roller Girls play one home game at the Rinks and one away game, often flying to other states to compete.

Players must pass a skills test and a written rules test to qualify for one of the teams. The matches are homemade affairs, as Shelton and the committees order T-shirts, line up chairs and even lug in portable toilets on occasion.

“We do it all for love,” Shelton said. “None of us get paid.”

A sorority for tough sisters

Davis, who found out two weeks ago that she was on the roster for “Love Hurts,” is heading toward her first match with a mix of joy and nerves. Since getting the news, she said, she’s been asking teammates to help her practice hitting and blocking — and studying on the side.

“I’ve been looking up YouTube videos, because I’m still getting the hang of the rules,” Davis said. “Once you’re in the game, it’s hard to remember everything because there’s so much going on.”

For all its rough-and-tumble nature, part of what players love about roller derby is the bonding.

Lycia Mick, a fellow Back Bay Bombshell who’s also making her debut Saturday, said her teammates were welcoming and encouraging during her first practice — at least, when they weren’t knocking her down.

“It’s a great team to be a part of,” said Mick, a manager for Disneyland Resort who has two teenage children.

The sport, Davis said, has allowed her to make friends with women her mother’s age, plus others of different cultures and economic backgrounds. It’s an unusual sisterhood, but Davis treasures the diversity.

“There’s got to be something in common among all of us, because we all chose this sport,” she said.

If You Go

What: The OC Roller Girls’ “Love Hurts” roller derby

Where: The Rinks, 5555 McFadden Ave., Huntington Beach

When: 7 p.m. Saturday

Tickets: $12 to $17

Information: (877) 623-3729 or www.ocrollergirls.com

THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

OsCene 2010, Laguna Art Museum hosted the Smashdown, a performance work by Long Beach-based Jocelyn Foye. Using clay to pad two walls of the museum's Steele Gallery, Foye will use the impressions the girls left as a mold to create a painted wall-piece.

"I like the spectacle," said Foye, who has also worked to capture the movements of sumo wrestlers and dancers. "I was always very interested in art where you were very close to a violence as well as a sensuality."

At the Smashdown, two girls at a time from each team skated around the room in a scaled-down match. As they approached the clay-covered walls, they launched themselves and each other onto the surface. Onlookers cheered for each fall and thump into the clay.

"You're willing to put yourself out there and entertain a little," said Rebeca Millam, known as Luz Panties with the OC Roller Girls. "You can be a totally empowered woman and also be sexy."

OC League president Heather Shelton aka Disco Dervish, whose own background includes art management, said she sees a lot of creative aspects in roller derby.

"You're putting on an event," she said, adding each woman on the team creates a new identity for herself through the sport. "Every game is a performance."

Featuring the two derby teams made sense to kick off the OsCene, which aims to show the diversity of local art, said curator Grace Kook-Anderson.

"There was this geographical battle between the two," she said.

Delving into the different local communities is part of what Foye enjoys about her artwork. Though she's lived in the area for more than eight years, she said her artwork takes her into new experiences with new people.

"I'm learning a lot about where I'm living," she said.

The event drew multiple generations, something attendee Cheryl Ekstrom enjoyed. Ekstrom, another OsCene artist whose work deals with changing traditions in a modern world, said she liked seeing the performance step away from the sometimes sterile traditional museum setting.

"It's about time people used that creativity," she said.

In the performance, she saw the fun and exuberant side of art.

"In a time when everyone is down about the recession and the economy, this is bringing people up," she said.

OC Roller Girls in OC Register

The Laguna Art Museum played host to a one of a kind art exhibit that featured two roller derby teams, some clay and of course a masterpiece.
Called Smashdown, the battle will happen on the evening of February 18, but will only be open to OsCene artists, members of the press, and special guests. In a very gutsy move, the Laguna Art Museum has designated an entire gallery for two teams of roller derby girls to get down and dirty in. During the match, each team will be “defending” a wall of fresh clay set up by Foye. The idea is that as the girls wreak havoc on each other, they will leave visible and unique imprints on the clay. Immediately following the match, Foye will pour liquid rubber or plastic over the clay to create a negative mold. Sections of these plastic or rubber pieces are then displayed as art, most often hung on the wall like paintings.

The roller derby match is the latest in a long-running series of cultural and sporting events that Foye has captured on clay and converted into a unique form of markmaking. Other events have included a wrestling match, a traditional Native American dance, a ballet dance, and a simulated cockfight.

The final score was Psychos 105, Bombshells 57. Thanks to the fans and supporters who helped kick off 2010 with a bang!

Ever seen those crash-test commercials where a car hurtles towards a wall at breakneck speeds? Have you seen the aftermath of broken glass and mangled bumpers? Then you have an idea of what it's like to be hit by the infamous Brik Wall.

Brik, #00, has been with The OC Roller Girls since the beginning and has helped to shape the league into the incredible organization we enjoy today. She is all heart off the track, involved in fundraising and volunteer work. But, when she crosses the track lines, she puts fierce power and aggression in to her hits.

She doesn't stop at power blocking, though. She frequently racks up points on the scoreboard as one of the league's jammers as well. She can engage in "jammer on jammer action" that makes the other team's jammer quake in her skates. Did you know that blockers can only hit a jammer within 20 feet of the pack, but it's legal for jammers to hit each other anywhere on the track?

Purchase an "I heart Brik Wall" shirt from the OC Roller Girls website or merch table and cheer for Brik at our next bout. She'll be the one with the big personality and even bigger hits, sending girls flying in to the bleachers. Go Brik!

San Diego Starlettes Angela Ficarra and Chenoa Regan pulled up tape following their first home game.

By day, they go by their regular names — Sarah, Allison, Linneae and Teresa. They work regular jobs — teacher, physician, day-care provider and graphic artist.

All that changes Saturday night. That’s when the women and their teammates don helmets, pads, roller skates, black T-shirts and ruffled skirts. Even their names change: Lady Diesel, Wonder Whoop ’em, Rumble Pie and Velvet Klaw.

They are the Starlettes, one of several women’s amateur roller derby teams operating in San Diego County. Their matches, or “bouts,” take place on an oval track marked with tape on the wooden floor of a local skating rink, surrounded by spectators who whoop and holler as the women aim body blows at their opponents and whiz by on spinning wheels.

“It’s just such an outlet,” said Linneae Collins, also known as Rumble Pie. “My day is very structured. I take care of kids and watch kids in my house during the day.”

Roller derby, she said, “is a time when it’s really for me. I kind of zone out. It’s a place to release all the energy I’ve held in all day and any frustrations I have. There’s no better way to get them out than hitting someone.”

The Starlettes were formed 18 months ago and, on a recent, Saturday played their first home bout at Skateworld in Linda Vista before a supportive crowd of some 700 people, many of them friends and relatives of the skaters. The Starlettes lost 103-56 to the Orange County Rollergirls, but after the bout, the players wore smiles on their tired faces.

“The girls I skate with are awesome. It’s a great sisterhood. It’s really empowering,” said Allison Ross, also known as Wonder Whoop ’em, a family physician who has suffered a cracked rib and a black eye while competing in roller derby.

“I think we’ve got a lot of good players, but we have to work together a little more as a team,” said Ross.

Cheryl Seeling, also known as Hell Toro, is a member of the Orange County team. She’s been skating with the squad since April and enjoys “the roughness of it. You can still be feminine but play a sport that caters to your tomboy side.”

Starlettes team captain Sarah “Lady Diesel” Lang said the team started in July 2008 after the San Diego Derby Dolls moved from Skateworld to a new venue at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Other local teams include the Escondido Hidden City Derby Girls and the National City Renegades.

The Starlettes play under rules established by a national group, the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, which is based in Texas, where the most recent incarnation of the sport of roller derby began early last decade. Modern women’s roller derby was highlighted in a 2009 movie, “Whip It,” starring Ellen Page. According to Lang, each team fields four blockers and one jammer. The blockers line up in a group, with the jammers behind them. Refs dressed in black and white uniforms skate in the middle of the oval. When the whistle blows, the pack starts first, then the jammers. Teams score when their jammer moves through the pack of blockers, laps the group and then passes the opposing team’s blockers again.

The blockers play offense and defense at the same time, trying to help their own jammer through the pack while preventing the other team’s jammer from scoring.

It is a full-contact sport, and players can use their torsos to hit or block the opposing players. Contact with elbows, knees or heads will trigger a penalty call.

Lang said some 400 amateur women’s teams are engaged in the sport across the United States, representing nearly all the states.

The resurgent roller derby game is different from the version popularized in the 1960s and 1970s by such teams as the famed Los Angeles Thunderbirds, said Gary Stang, the owner of Skateworld and one of the Starlettes’ coaches.

Old-school roller derby, which was played by both men’s and women’s squads, often went over the top with chair-throwing, hair-pulling and fist-fighting, Stang said. Today’s sport is much more of a skill game.

Fundamentals of skating and safety, such as how to fall correctly, are emphasized with the players.

“This is a safe sport, when done right,” he said.

While risks can be minimized, they can’t be eliminated.

“There’s definitely the risk of injury involved. It’s full contact on wheels,” said Lang, who has suffered such injuries as a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her knee and fractured ribs.

But after surgery for the torn ACL, she couldn’t wait to complete her rehab and get back on her skates.

Lang, who played softball in college, said she turned to roller derby while looking for a stress outlet.

“I needed something that was a little bit more than just going and having fun. Something that I could wrap my arms around,” Lang said. “I went to a practice and I’m stuck. I can’t imagine my life without it.”

The sport also whips up the passions of the audience, as evidenced at the Starlettes’ first home bout. Every time a home-team jammer burst through the pack, the crowd’s cheers rose to earsplitting levels.

The audience included every age level from young children to seniors.

John Hall, a former executive with the L.A. Thunderbirds and a friend of Stang’s, was on hand as a “guest coach.” He said roller derby has evolved from its heyday to become less theatrical, but it still represents affordable family entertainment.

“That’s what it’s about, something to do, and you don’t have to take out a loan,” said Hall.

As for the Starlettes, he said, “They impressed me as well as they impressed the fans that were there.”

OC Roller Girls in OC Weekly about Long Beach Comic Con

By Sandeep Abraham, Monday, Feb. 1 2010 @ 4:00PM

"The Long Beach Comic Con was a great opportunity for fans and pros to meet in a great environment. Sign me up for next year!" said John Drdek, a writer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles last October. Fortunately, we don't have to wait that long.

Just a fraction of what the Long Beach Comic Con had to offer in October.

Owing to the tremendous success of the Stan Lee-christened inception of Long Beach Comic Con last October, the LBCC decided to give us an encore in the form of the one-day Long Beach Comic Expo. We were regaled last year with fantastic tales (and outrageous pictures) of sexy Mario, local pro-wrestlers, and many fanboy-teasing OC roller girls. The upcoming convention, which will be held in the Promenade Ballroom at the Long Beach Convention Center on February 20 at 10 a.m., and its line-up of guests, promise to be just as epic.

(Laguna Beach, Calif.)—Eight women on skates battling it out against two walls of clay. What could be more artistic?

Just ask Long Beach-based performance artist Jocelyn Foye, who will mix the spectator sport with sculptural art at the Laguna Art Museum’s OsCene 2010 next month, redefining the art gallery experience.

“I was looking for a contact sport that mixed a certain level of sensuality and violence, and roller derby had just become really popular,” says Foye, who first exhibited with the Roller Derby girls two years ago.

Foye is one of 49 visual artists invited participate in “The OsCene: Contemporary Art and Culture in OC” featuring painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, multimedia installations, video, performance, architecture and design Feb. 21 to May 16.

http://michellepanik.com

Attention OC Roller Derby fans: with the new season upon us, fishnet stockings
are, thankfully, still in fashion. The Psycho Ex-Girlfriends outscored the Back Bay Bombshells in a 105-57 bout on January 9 that was filled with all the sassy hip checks, body blocks, and grand slams that fans have come to love and expect from the baddest girls in the OC.

The season opener featured newly shuffled teams—an attempt to evenly distribute talent and experience, as well as stir up a little rivalry—and the result was an exciting bout for both veteran and new spectators.

Jayne from Fountain Valley learned of the OC Roller Girls from a friend, and the two of them were attending for “a new experience.” Another first-timer, Laurie from Yorba Linda, attended the bout with an Orange County singles group called Get Out There Orange County (http://www.meetup.com/gotoc).

When asked what she thought of the bout, Laurie said, “I wanted it to be a little rougher.” Get Out There Orange County’s organizer, Larry from Irvine, said between 30 and 40 people had signed up to attend the event. He chose the Roller Girls’ season opener as an activity because he simply “wanted to see what it’s all about.”

What it’s about are fans that include groups of teenage girls in plaid skirts and tennis shoes, families with young kids, and groups of men who cheer as if they were at the Big “A.”

A record-breaking 900 fans were in attendance, and they bought an unprecedented amount of Roller Derby schwag spanning the gamut from “Future Ref” toddler onesies to knee-highs printed with pistols.

Their cash also went to the evening’s charity, Southwest Community Center
(http://www.swcommunitycenter.org), which provides support to the economically disadvantaged.

Helping with the donations was Naughty Pine, a fresh meat skater who’s hoping to be on a team soon. She joined the league because of its all-welcoming environment. “It doesn’t matter where you come from,” she says. “We have women from 18 to 53 in this league.” Naughty Pine is an example of the league’s ability to attract strong, exceptional women; she is a carpenter-machinist who owns a machine shop that manufactures bulletproof shields for streetlights.

Rage N Ribbons, a fellow fresh meat skater, does it for “anger management and camaraderie.” When asked how she deals with falling, she simply says, “I have to just get past that.” And then she continues with a smile. “Knees falls are the best. But if you don’t have the pads or a mouth guard, it hurts.”

The match was close through the first part, with the Psycho Ex-Girlfriends leading 35-34 at halftime. During the second half, though, they let their scorned-woman angst fly, and dominated the jams.

Afterwards, the Back Bay Bombshells’ On the Roxy was disappointed to have spent so much time in the penalty box. Asked to comment about the shakeup in team rosters, she says, “It’s definitely been a change.”

But the change didn’t seem to have bothered the Psycho Ex-Girlfriends, who dominated the match’s second half. Team veteran Kay Hoenaze says the bout “went better than expected. We executed the majority of the skills that we set out to do.”

But the match wasn’t a complete disappointment for the Bombshells; Puck Her
Up skated in her second bout and her first jam, where she scored three points.
If this match is any indicator, the 2010 season will be the most thrilling yet. And so, with the prospect of ten more action-packed home games, I am providing my tips for your next OC Roller Girls match:

1. Spring for the VIP tickets. They are well worth the extra cost. No floodlights in your eyes, and you get an elevated view of every body check.

2. Hit the beer garden. The cold suds taste great, and your money goes to a
charity. (This week it was Breast Cancer Angels [http://breastcancerangels.org], which supports women stricken with breast cancer and their families.)

3. Afterwards, stick around. You can line up on the rink’s edge to slap hands with all competitors, and even chat with a roller girl or two. Though brutal on the rink, when the game clock’s not running they are actually quite charming.

4. Come back! When you know more about the players and teams, rowdiness comes with ease.
OC Roller Girls 1/9/10 Bout Recap on Derby News Network

Article here
(Edited)
OC Roller Girls Psycho ExGirlfriends 105, Back Bay Bombshells 57 -- The bout for OC's longtime rivals was a nailbiter through the first half, but the Psycho ExGirlfriends dominated the second half to claim the victory in Huntingon Beach, CA.

At the half, it was just a 1 point game at 35-34 Psychos. Psychos Ice Cube and Bombshells Beantown led their teams in scoring with 14 points each. Both teams kept it clean and not many girls were repeat offenders in the penalty box -- though that would change by the end of the bout, by which time Psycho Ruby Rocker had visited the sin bin enough times to warrant a change-of-address form, with 5 trips to the penalty box.

For Gardea, competing in O.C. Roller Girl roller derby organization "means extreme dedication and accountability."

Q. How long have you been a roller girl?

A. I have been playing roller derby for three years. I started in July of 2006. I am a jammer (point scorer) and blocker. I mostly jammed my first two years, this year stepping up to block, but still jamming. I used to skate when I was younger. In the neighborhood, we used to pretend we were playing roller derby. My favorite team at the time was "Fabulous Thunderbirds." I used to go to the Bellflower skating rink and race,

I was 10. Now that I am older, I spotted a couple of girls on my ex-boyfriend's Myspace and they played roller derby. I was so excited! I play a lot of sports and roller derby had my name all over it! I e-mailed them, met up at the rink and here I am. I played on the Orange County Demolition Divas for one year, they broke up and I went to OC in July 2007.

Q. What does being a roller girl mean to you?

A. I love playing roller derby! I don't necessarily call myself a Roller Girl, I like to be called a roller derby girl. It means extreme dedication and accountability. We play a competitive, full contact sport that most of us are serious about our game. The bruises and injuries are real.

Q. Is the cause behind the program important to you?

A. Our biggest cause we skated and raised money for is for breast cancer, The event is called "Roll for a Cure." Breast Cancer Angels. We have had this event since the league started. I believe we raised $4000 this year. We were very proud to be a part of the cause. Roller derby is a big part of a lot of women's lives. We all take it pretty serious. We practice three times a week and we are career women and mothers. We love the game and the friendships.

Q. Do you have any special stories that happened to you in your involvement with the Roller Girls? Elaborate.

A. I got to experience going to New Orleans with our travel team. This was so much fun and quite the experience. We played in the building were they built and kept all the floats for Mardi Gras. We won! It was awesome! I also had the wonderful experience of getting MVP two times at our Roll for a Cure events — 2008 and 2009. I am a humble skater, but I was quite proud of these achievements, as the other teams voted for MVP. We played Minnesota in 2008, and Arizona in 2009. I have gotten other awards from my league which I am proud of also. I am one of the oldest on my league, We have about five girls in our 40s and we all are pretty darn good.

Q. Are your friends in Roller Girls?

A. My friend Ter-Devil started with me in 2006 and came with me to OC. I have made a lot of friends on our league and other leagues all over the country. We have traveled quite a bit.

Q. What is the best part about being an OC Roller Girl?

A. Playing the game and winning, of course, haha. I love dressing up and working the crowd! We all have nicknames. My name is Kina Wahine #10. I lived in Hawaii for 11 years. I miss it! I have an Hawaiian theme. Kina means Gina in Hawaiian and Wahine is a female. and my number is for hang 10. I usually wear hot pants, fishnets and sporty tube socks. I wear flowers in my hair, a lei, face paint and a lot of glitter! I throw shell leis out to the crowd when we are announced. It's so exciting and fun!
